There is no more revealing view of humanity’s global footprint than our night-time glow. This new composite view was built from images taken on cloud-free nights by the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite, launched by NASA, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Department of Defense in October 2011.

Pan and zoom the map to explore features including the dark realm of North Korea, wildfires in Australia, and pinpricks of light from oil and gas platforms in the Gulf of Mexico and the North Sea.
